Nomenclature Mvogo Ndongo et al. (2024) recently described four new species of freshwater crabs, Sudanonautes cameroonensis, S. eyimba, S. ngaoundere, and S. nkam, from Cameroon, Central Africa. Unfortunately, the names Sudanonautes cameroonensis Mvogo Ndongo, Clark, von Rintelen & Cumberlidge, 2024, S. eyimba Mvogo Ndongo, Clark, von Rintelen & Cumberlidge, 2024, S. ngaoundere Mvogo Ndongo, Clark, von Rintelen & Cumberlidge, 2024, and S. nkam Mvogo Ndongo, Clark, von Rintelen & Cumberlidge, 2024 as published in DIVERSITY (https://doi.org/ 10.3390/d16060345) are all unavailable under the current Zoological Code (ICZN 1999, 2012). This is because DIVERSITY is an online-only publication with no printed version, and the Code requires electronic-only publications to have a Zoobank registrationnumber (LSID) for validation of new names contained inside.
The descriptions of Sudanonautes cameroonensis, S. eyimba, S. ngaoundere, and S. nkam by Mvogo Ndongo et al. (2024) were all in volume 16. This volume, however, did not include an LSID number for the new species and has a publication date of 14 June 2024 (Version of Record—VoR). To validate the four new species names, the LSID number was submitted on 18 June 2024, but DIVERSITY refused to alter the publication date from 14 June to 19 June 2024, and this has resulted in nomenclatorial issues with the names.
Currently, two versions of the article are available on the DIVERSITY website (https://www.mdpi.com/1424-2818/16/6/345/notes): a VoR version published 14 June 2024, without the required LSID number, and a revised “VoR” version, published on 20 June 2024, including the LSID number obtained on 19 June. As registration clearly occurred after publication (see revised Art. 8.5, ICZN, 2012) the names are unavailable from Mvogo Ndongo et al. (2024). Type material is deposited in the Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin, Germany (ZMB) and in the zoological collection of the Cameroon Association for Research on Crustaceans and others Aquatic Resources, Cameroon (CARC).
The present note serves to validate the names Sudanonautes cameroonensis, S. eyimba, S. ngaoundere, and S. nkam by fulfilling the ICZN requirements. [details]
