Taxonomy This species is Necora puber (Linnaeus, 1767). It was moved into the new genus Necora by Holthuis, 1987. Sometimes mentioned as Macropipus puber Holthuis & Gottlieb, 1958, although this is incorrect. It was originally described as Cancer puber Linnaeus, 1767. Holthuis & Gottlieb (1958) merely listed it under that combination in their checklist to the Mediterranean fauna, they did not describe it as new. Prior to the description of Necora it had been variously attributed to Macropipus and Liocarcinus. [details]
