A new species of pontiniine shrimp, Palaemonella maziwi sp. nov., from East Africa, is designated, having been previously misidentified with P. spinulata Yokoya, 1936. Further morphological details are noted and illustrated. Literature records of Palaemonella spinulata from the western Indian Ocean are erroneous.
